Plenary session #4: Measuring sustainability with the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

Trainer: Alka Banerjee, Managing Director, S&P Dow Jones Indices

Mission

How companies need to understand of the importance of ESG and then to measure it.

The Dow Jones Sustainability indices were the first indices of its kind to measure the most sustainable companies in the world. S&P Dow Jones research partner RobecoSAM sends detailed questionnaires to more than 3,000 companies globally each year with detailed sector specific questions around their environmental, social and economic governance criteria. The last ‘economic’ dimension includes corporate governance matters as well as questions on risk management and tax policies , all of which are seen impacting companies sustainability. Companies are scored relative to their peers in their sector. Those companies who do not respond are then assessed by RobecoSAM based on publicly available information. The DJSI Global index includes the top 10% performing companies within each sector. The session will explain the importance of ESG metrics to an increasing number of investors, the importance of transparency in the information and the key considerations within the assessment.
